Applied Mathematics

Pure Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Nelson Mandela University is committed to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of mathematics. Our department is home to a dynamic and diverse group of scholars, offering specialised programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. With a focus on both pure and applied mathematical principles, we provide students with the analytical tools and critical thinking skills necessary for success in academia, industry, and beyond.

Our Programs

We offer two distinct undergraduate majors:

  • Mathematics: This program provides a strong foundation in pure mathematical theory, preparing students for research, teaching, and careers that demand abstract problem-solving and logical reasoning.
  • Applied Mathematics: This program emphasizes the practical application of mathematical techniques to solve real-world problems in fields such as physics, engineering, economics, and data science.

Academic Excellence

Our faculty, consisting of 25 academic staff, are experts in a broad range of mathematical fields and are passionate about both teaching and research. They deliver mathematical modules to all seven faculties of the university, ensuring that mathematics plays a pivotal role across disciplines.

Facilities

Our facilities that support student learning and research:

  • Undergraduate Lab for Applied Mathematics: A dedicated space for hands-on learning, experimentation, and collaboration in Applied Mathematics. During the work week during non practical times between the hours of 08:00 and 16:00 our second year applied mathematics students, and third year and up mathematics and applied mathematics students have access to the lab for free study.
  • Postgraduate Lab for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics: A specialized environment for postgraduate students to conduct research and collaborate with faculty on advanced mathematical problems. Our Masters and PhD students have access to this lab 24/7.
  • Study Corners: There are some community desks on the mathematics floor for students for quiet study close to the lecturers for quick consultation access.

Support and Engagement

We believe in providing a supportive and interactive environment for our students:

  • Consultations: The department offers both in-person and online consultations to help students with their academic progress and understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Tutorials: We offer in-person and online tutorials for individual modules, providing targeted support and personalized attention.
  • Independent Study Sessions: Senior student mentors are available for independent study sessions, where they guide and assist peers in mastering complex topics.

Mathematics Club

Our Mathematics Club is an initiative that fosters a sense of community within the department. It features a series of presentations where students can explore a wide range of topics, including:

  • Tools and techniques used in mathematics
  • Fascinating mathematical facts
  • Current research trends in mathematics

The club encourages student participation, allowing students to volunteer as presenters, share their own research, or present on areas of personal interest. It provides a platform for engaging with peers, learning from guest speakers, and exploring the broader world of mathematics.

Visit us

Main Office: Our central hub is located on the second floor of Building 7 (The M&P Building) on South Campus. This is where our Undergraduate and Postgraduate Labs can be found along with the main offices of staff

Satellite Consultation Offices: We have satellite consultation offices on various campuses. Since these offices are staffed based on lecturer schedules, we recommend contacting your lecturer directly for the current consultation schedule and locations.
