At Nelson Mandela University, we offer two distinct majors in mathematics to cater to different interests and career paths:

  • Applied MathematicsThis major forms a vital link between the elegance of theoretical mathematics and its powerful applications in the real world. You'll gain expertise in translating problems from diverse fields like engineering, finance, biology, and physics into precise mathematical models. The Applied Mathematics track places a strong emphasis on numerical analysis, optimisation, and differential equations as key computational techniques. This focus on practical problem-solving equips you to tackle complex challenges across a wide range of industries.

  • Pure Mathematics: This major focuses on mathematics for its own sake, highlighting the beauty and elegance of abstract concepts. You will explore areas such as algebra, calculus, and analysis, developing strong reasoning and problem-solving skills. The Pure Mathematics major is ideal for those interested in the theoretical side of mathematics and its foundational principles.

You can choose to major in both Pure and Applied Mathematics or combine your chosen mathematics major with related fields such as computer science, physics, or statistics, creating a tailored academic background to suit your career goals, whether in AI, Data Analysis, Biological Modelling, or other specialised areas.

Degrees which in which you can major in Mathematics:

To successfully complete a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, you'll need to 2 majors and to accumulate 30 credits per major in first year, 40 credits per major in second year and 60 credits per major in third year.

"Entering my undergraduate program, I expected to focus mainly on algorithms and automation, but quickly realized how deeply rooted these and many other fields are in mathematics. My time at NMU exposed me to the essential role of mathematics in solving real-world problems, sparking my interest in quantitative analysis over software development. The department, through its supportive lecturers and exposure to alumni projects and research, played a pivotal role in shaping this path, and I’m deeply grateful for their guidance throughout my degree."
